Rebecca Dart: An Olde Murder Ballad
November 6th, 2009
Great cartooning on display in this adaptation of an old ballad by Rebecca Dart (via DD). It reminded me a bit of both Cyril Pedrosa and Craig Thompson, but with a flair all its own.
Dart’s been in animation for a while, with occasional stabs at comics, but I hope hers is a name we’ll hear more of in connection with comics in the coming years— especially after checking out the lively and original artwork in her other recent Livejournal entries (some NSFW).

Its funny because I was just looking at the art before reading what you had to say and got excited thinking you were going to talk about something new from Cyril. The man in the picture above looks so similar to the father from three shadows.
However, looking at her art I do think she brings more of a sense of gritty realism to the page than either Craig Thompson or Cyril Pedrosa, which is impressive given how similar she is to each of them in using a style which they use so well to escape some of that grittiness of reality and add some whimsy for lack of a better word.
What really impressed me is how *different* her other art was on the LJ was.
I would love to see a GN with her crazy barbarian gals.
I was thinking the same thing.
Her comic Rabbithead from 2004 was a really interest experiment:

(Would’ve made a great side scrolling webcomic.)
I was scrambling to find my copy of Rabbithead yesterday but couldn’t. I know I have one somewhere in this messy studio, but I can’t remember if I got it in Vancouver or not.
Just out of cuirousity, since I’m free on November 11,is there any way for us to see your lecture on skype?
‘Fraid that one’s private. Sorry.
Will be speaking in London again next year though. Details soon.
